Dodgers Unheralded Prospect Series: Luis Rodriguez Is A Breakout Candidate According to Baseball America

Baseball America has a new article about 13 Breakout MLB Prospects With Top 100 Potential and there was a Dodger mentioned, Luis Rodriguez. Since many of you may not have heard of Luis, he also fits in with our Unheralded Prospect Series. Rodriguez is just 17 years old and signed with with the Dodgers in July of 2019 as an international free agent.

Luis Rodriguez was one of the most highly sought after international free agents in 2019. The Dodgers signed him when he was just 16 years old out of Venezuela. Now, all of 17 years old, he is already 6′ 2″ and weighs around 175 pounds. Here’s some scouting information from Baseball America:

Rodriguez was one of the most complete players in his class with an exciting combination of hitting ability, power and athleticism. He takes a patient, all-fields approach and has advanced plate discipline for his age. He turns around velocity with his smooth, righthanded swing and has a natural ability to lift the ball for power, especially to right-center field.

To get a glimpse of his swing here is some video:

Rodriguez still has not played in a professional game. Like many very young prospects he stayed with the Dodgers’ training camp over the summer. They get in a lot of work with a slow introduction to professional baseball. Once the season starts he will probably go to the Dominican Summer League.

Luis Rodriguez is ready to leap out of the unheralded status to big time prospect without even playing a professional game. I am looking forward to watching him play at some point.
